Messy,over-crowded,hanging-wires,rickshaw traffic, etc were a few of the many words I'd heard about Chandni Chowk. A day before visiting this place, I thought of doing a bit of virtual research on this place. After browsing through the internet, I found out that this place was build in the middle of of the 'walled city' of Old Delhi in the 17th century.
Interestingly, it's name is related to the history too....The market was once divided by canals to reflect moonlight and that’s how it earned its name, ‘Chandni’ i.e. 'Moonlit'.
The fact that made me some what excited was that this place has been the center of attraction for many movies like Delhi-6,Chandni Chowk to China and a few of which I like...kabhi khushi kabhi gham and Love Aaj Kal!
Still,I was reluctant to visit this place knowing the amount of crowd and mess I'll have to pay visit to.
So,I decided to call my friends who always talked about taking me to famous food joints in Chandni Chowk. First food joint or a dhabha to be precised they talked about was 'Natraj Bhalle Waala'. I had always heard my sister and friends talk about how amazing his 'dhahi bhallas' were. They insisted me to visit this place as soon as i reach there. Next they talked about 'Old Famous Jalebi Waala'. I laughed on listening to this name but my mouth started watering when they described their jalebies....small,thin,made in desi ghee-second course to my meal tomorrow. Listening about a few more joints including the ones in the 'paranthe waali galli' and 'chaat bhandar' reminded me of an episode of 'Foodmad' which talked about all these food joints and their famous food recipies. This surely helped me to finally convince myself to go to these places once atleast! I am happy now I can go to Chandni Chowk to explore these places and not because its was supposed be a part of our college project!
Looking forward to my first visit to the 'oldest shopping market' of Delhi. Hope to find a place to walk through the crowded lanes and have a nice time!
